Starting Fresh with Fresh Photos.
So my plan for this shoot was simple:
- Get a good roller shot
- Slowly spend more time with an old friend
Both I feel like I achieved.
I phoned up Olivia (@plaine.jane.05 on insta) & asked if she was down for a shoot with her new car. I had bumped into her at a party a month prior and we got talking and mostly sorted things out. I also had mates telling me what car she got and I ecstatic to hear about it - a 1989 Honda Prelude.
Okay, Liv was down, but I realised id need a third person to drive my car so I could shoot "safely". Went through all of my friends who I knew wouldn`t be working or thought would be free... no one was. After messaging almost everyone I had two somewhat promising leads, Jayden & Rhiannon. Jayden is a long time mate, & Rhiannon & co-worker of mine who was looking to get back into shooting. I message Jayden first & was told he wouldn`t be finished until about 3pm which is when we started shooting. That's all good, so onto Rhiannon. Sadly later that day she had to cancel and we`d try again for another weekend.
My thoughts at this point were "stuff it, I'll just go grab some brilliant stills of the prelude". That was until Jayden told me that plans had changed & he would be finishing midday-ish. Awesome, locked in, we`re back on track.
With a quick meet-up at Taco Bell for afternoon tea, we head just up the road to out the back of Centenary Lakes at Caboolture. Definitely not the most glamorous of places, but a slightly grungy industrial feel, still with a bit of green also on the opposite side of the shoot. This is where I asked Jayden if he also wanted photos of his SS Commodore Ute in return, and of course he was happy to receive. (Photos below - click for full image). (Jaydens insta: @vejwx_)
Brilliant photos of both the prelude & the ss. It was begin to get later in the afternoon & I wanted to go try a roller or two. No chance of legally doing that with the equipment I had at the time in the heart of Caboolture. So out to the back end of Elimbah we drove where there was bugger all traffic and some roads are wide enough to fit three cars.
We got to a gravel road by a pineapple farm. Tried a couple runs with myself in both the passenger seat & "harnessed" in the backseat extremely safe. Sadly, I got one good one but slightly chopped the front end of the prelude off. Then we had brilliant idea of hopping back on an asphalt road which was very wide to grab some more with the trees as a backdrop. It was perfect, trees that would be streaky & blurred with the sunset coming through. During this we made sure both cars knew safety signals and were in direct contact through it all on the phone.
These three photos were the best. Each have their problems, but for a first time I was more than satisfied with them, with the middle photo being the best of the three. (click for full photos).
So after this win, we still had a lot of sunlight, but it was setting slow. I couldn`t think for the life of me of a good spot. I believe everything happens for a reason, and you bet it does because Jayden & Amy (who had been riding shotgun with Jayden thus far) had mention of a spot that they knew of not even 5 minutes away. So back in the cars we hop and drive. it was a fairly rocky drive for low and slow cars. Half way down one road I nearly called Jayden & asked to head back, but we saw asphalt up a head, no worries. That didn't last too long. After a minute back on the black top, we took another turn onto more gravel. After a minute or two driving we stopped a T junction. We hoped out and talked about what we could do or how much further we need to go. Both Jayden & I took this chance to get a couple photos of his car as Liv took my car which was more capable to go up further scouting.
Now there is always going to be photos you love & ones you ask yourself "what was I thinking?". It was here I only got this one above. But that only gave me more drive to finish the shoot on a better note & try to get some sunset shots.
It was then Liv came back with a possible spot she found up a little further. It was basically a perfect spot.
I was able to shoot both the prelude & SS and get some beautiful shots.
Yes these photos are very similar but I was shooting for two people, & I also wanted to keep the general look of each set very similar. This I always say, "there`s nothing wrong with presets, as long as you do some small alterations to make it yours".
During each shoot I do my best to choose what I think is the photo that is going to be the best photo of the shoot, before I even take the photos back to my office for editing, and here is this shoots pearler:
Absolute bloody pearler! Right moment at the right time. It`s moments like this one where I surprise myself because it wasn't planned in the slightest and i just squatted down for a different photo, but also shot this. Now Jayden & I had planned to go & get more shots at a car wash but I had cut it short, so that leaves more photo opportunity for down the track.
Was a brilliant shoot, with brilliant people. Was very happy to tick both goals off, and some more.
